Interstate 40 Re-opens

Interstate 40 is now open in both directions between Amarillo and Tucumcari.

The interstate opened between 7 and 7:30 a.m. today, said Paul Braun, information specialist with Texas Department of Transportation.

Crews are removing slush from roadways, he said.

"Where there's been lots of travel, the slush is being packed into ice," Braun said.

The only road closed is Farm-to-Market Road 748 from Miami to FM Road 1268, he said.

"Because it's a construction zone, and the mud turned it into a ice rink," Braun said.

Over an inch of snow blanketed Amarillo during the night, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist David Hennig.

The official snow measurement is 1.3 inches and it began falling about 1 a.m., he said.

Skies are clearing snow, but he expects clouds to come in from the west.

"I don't expect the rest of the day to be nice and cloud free," Hennig said.

The Dallam County Sheriff's office reported five inches of snow in Dalhart with deputies reporting four to six inches throughout the county, he said.

Perryton had 1/4-inch freezing rain, Hennig said.

Department of Public Safety troopers reported a quiet night, said Trooper Wayne Beighle.

While all major roads are open, some secondary roads are very slick, he said.

"We don't want people to have a false sense of security, we still have some very slick road conditions," Beighle said.

He advised people to drive slowly and leave early.
